JACOB VAN DER DOES
A pastoral scene by Jacob Van Der Does ( Amsterdam 1623 – Sloten 1673 ). 17th century oil on canvas with a later frame. Jacob was a student of Nicolaes Moeyaert, enrolled at the university of Leiden. In 1643 he visited Italy, becoming a member of Schildersbent with a nickname of Tamboer. He moved to The Hague in 1650 where he devoted himself to painting mainly Italian landscapes with animals, especially sheep and goats. He also painted portraits and some architectural works. During his lifetime his works fetched high prices. Sources recall that one of his paintings depicting a goat was purchased for 1000 florins. During his stay in Rome, he became familiar with the works of Pieter Van Laer, who influenced his style.
